Europol Announces Arrest of 132 Members of ‘Ndrangheta, World’s Richest Organized Crime Group

Europol has announced the arrest of 132 members of the 'Ndrangheta, a powerful criminal network responsible for much of Europe's cocaine trade, money laundering, bribery, and violence. The operation involved 2,770 officers from 10 countries and is being described as the "largest-ever coordinated hit" against the 'Ndrangheta. The raids took place in eight European countries, as well as Brazil and Panama, and is a major step in the fight against organized crime.

Matteo Messina Denaro, the leader of the Cosa Nostra Mafia in Sicily, has been arrested by Italian police after being a fugitive since 1993. Denaro was sentenced to life in prison in absentia in 1992 for his role in the murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the arrest was “a great victory for the state”, and Denaro is considered one of the most wanted men in Europe.
