After a tumultuous few weeks in the Capitol, the House of Representatives passed a clean continuing resolution with bipartisan support, avoiding a potential government shutdown. This displeased some of the more hard-right members of the House, who had to compromise in order to pass the resolution, and there were even allegations of kidney punching in the House. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) commented on the situation, saying “They were better behaved than some of the people in this place.” The resolution has averted a potential government shutdown, but tensions remain high in the Capitol.

White House Requests Emergency Funding from Congress for Pandemic Relief, Disaster Funds, and Aid for Ukraine

The White House has requested emergency funding from Congress for pandemic relief for the child care industry, replenishment of U.S. federal disaster funds, and aid for Ukraine. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Tina Smith have called on President Biden to address the looming expiration of pandemic relief funds in the package. The Biden administration has requested more than $13 billion in emergency defense aid to Ukraine and an additional $8 billion for humanitarian support.

Pope Francis to be Discharged from Hospital Saturday, Will Attend Palm Sunday Mass

Pope Francis is set to be discharged from a Rome hospital on Saturday, where he was treated for bronchitis. He will be present for the Palm Sunday Mass at the start of Holy Week, although it is not yet confirmed if he will deliver the homily. During his hospital stay, he baptized a baby in the pediatrics ward and has been receiving antibiotics intravenously.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has called for stricter banking regulations in response to the recent collapse of two banks. She believes that lifting the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) insurance cap from its current $250,000 limit should be considered, and has criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for failing to do his job. Warren's proposal would require regulators to do their jobs and protect consumers from banks that are under-regulated.

US Department of Energy Adds to Confusion and Debate Over Origins of Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a source of confusion and debate since it began in late 2019, with the US Department of Energy recently adding to the confusion with its assessment that the most likely cause was a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China. Rep. Seth Moulton and the FBI have sided with the lab hypothesis, but divisions remain in the US intelligence community. President Joe Biden has called for a full report from the intelligence community, and has said he will accept its conclusions.
