Australia plans to double the maximum fine for social media platforms that fail to keep under-16s off their services, raising penalties to A$99 million. The government says children are still bypassing the ban and regulators are investigating Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.

Canada has introduced Bill C-34, a digital safety proposal that would ban social media for children under 16 unless platforms meet safety standards. The legislation would also regulate AI chatbots and create a new digital safety regulator.
Florida has become the first state to sue OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman over ChatGPT’s design and safety, alleging the company put profit ahead of user protection. OpenAI says it has built protections for minors into its products and is committed to improving safety.
