CDC Report Reveals Alarming Increase in Cases of Deadly Fungus Candida auris

A new CDC report has revealed that clinical cases of Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent threat, nearly doubled in 2021. The report showed a tripling of cases resistant to echinocandins, the first-line treatment for Candida auris infections, and the director of the National Reference Centre for Invasive Fungus Infections has called the rise in cases "alarming". A new study published in Pediatrics has revealed an unexpected jump in unexplained deaths in Black infants during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, with the rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) increasing by 15%. The overall infant mortality rate dropped to a record low in 2020, but the rate for Black babies in particular spiked, widening an already stark disparity. Dr. Marian Willinger noted that the pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on Black communities and could be a factor in the increase in SUID rates. The CDC is urging parents to practice safe sleep habits and seek medical care for their babies if they have any concerns.

At the Gridiron Club Dinner in Washington, DC, former Vice President Mike Pence delivered a speech that was both lighthearted and serious, including jokes about President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as a rebuke of former President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th attack. Pence's comments come as the Republican party is divided over Trump's legacy and whether to embrace him or reject him in the future, and it remains to be seen whether his words will have any effect.
