Republican Steve Hilton will face Democrat Xavier Becerra in California’s November governor’s race after advancing from the state’s top-two primary. Becerra led with about 28% of the vote, followed by Hilton at 25%, with 88% of the expected vote counted.

Donald Trump walked out of an NBC Meet the Press interview after Kristen Welker challenged his claims that California’s primary elections and the 2020 presidential election were rigged. The interview also covered Iran, the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and a dropped $1.8 billion compensation proposal.
Trump defended a nearly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund and declined to rule out payments for Jan. 6 defendants charged with assaulting police. He also claimed without evidence that California elections were rigged as votes continued to be counted.
Xavier Becerra has advanced to the November election for California governor, while Steve Hilton and Tom Steyer remain in contention for the second slot. Millions of mail ballots are still being counted under California’s top-two primary system.
