Egypt-Brokered Cease-Fire Brings Relief to Gaza and Israel After Five Days of Intense Fighting

After five days of intense fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire has been agreed to by both sides, starting at 10 p.m. local time on Saturday. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of 33 Palestinians and two people in Israel, and hundreds of thousands of Israelis and more than two million people in Gaza had been largely confined to bomb shelters. Despite a last-minute burst of rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes, the cease-fire brings a sense of relief to the region, though it remains to be seen how long it will last.

At Least 17 Killed and Hundreds Injured After Powerful Earthquake Strikes Turkey and Syria

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and Syria on Monday morning, killing at least 17 people and injuring hundreds more. The quake caused buildings to collapse and sent panicked residents into the streets, with rescue workers and residents searching through piles of rubble in the aftermath. The USGS reported the quake was centered east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep province at a depth of 24.1 kilometers, and Turkey's Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the government was providing assistance to those affected.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Israel and the Palestinians to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions following a deadly attack in East Jerusalem.
