CDC Issues Level 1 Travel Advisory for Baja California, Mexico, Warning of Risk of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF)

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a level 1 travel advisory for Baja California, Mexico, warning travelers of the potential risk of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). After a San Diego resident who traveled to Baja California died last month from the disease, the CDC is urging travelers to take precautions to protect themselves from tick bites, such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, using insect repellent, and checking for ticks after being outdoors. The agency is also recommending that travelers to Baja California take extra precautions to reduce their risk of contracting RMSF and other tick-borne illnesses.

Hunter Biden Indicted on Nine Federal Tax-Related Charges, Including Three Felony Counts

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has been indicted on nine federal tax-related charges, including three felony counts. The charges allege that Hunter Biden failed to pay taxes, failed to file, evaded an assessment and filed a fraudulent form, resulting in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in federal income taxes. If convicted, Hunter Biden could face up to five years in prison for each of the three felony counts and a maximum of one year in prison for each of the six misdemeanor counts. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.

Former California Police Chief Sentenced to 11+ Years in Prison for Role in U.S. Capitol Attack

Alan Hostetter, a former California police chief, was sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison on Thursday for his role in the U.S. Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. He was found guilty of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, entering or remaining on restricted grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon and disorderly or disruptive conduct on restricted grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon. At his sentencing hearing, Hostetter continued to spread conspiracy theories and called for the execution of Donald Trump's political enemies, prompting the judge to call his actions "a direct assault on the heart of our democracy."

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Wednesday that he will be resigning from Congress at the end of the year, citing a desire to serve America in new ways. The Orange County Sheriff's Department has identified Iowa teen Michael Ray Schlicht as one of the earliest victims of notorious serial killer Randy Kraft, dubbed the "Scorecard Killer". DNA testing was used to identify Schlicht's remains, and the Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information about Kraft or any of his victims to contact them. Kraft is currently serving a life sentence in San Quentin State Prison for 16 counts of murder, but authorities believe he may have been responsible for as many as 50 murders.

The House of Representatives will vote on a resolution to expel embattled New York Republican Rep. George Santos this week, after a damning report from the House Ethics Committee found substantial evidence of criminal activity. The resolution, introduced by California Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, requires a two-thirds majority vote to pass and would be the first time in more than two decades that a member of Congress has been expelled. If passed, it would be the first time in history that a member of Congress has been expelled due to criminal charges.
