Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected as the 56th speaker of the House in a party-line vote, with all 220 Republicans voting for him. Johnson is a close ally of former President Donald Trump and had led many of the 2020 election challenges, including an amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans. Johnson is the most ideologically conservative speaker since Newt Gingrich in the 1990s and is now second in line to the presidency.

The fund will provide $1200 per month to every adult resident who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires. Applications are being accepted from anyone 18 or older who lives in the affected area and has been displaced by the wildfires. The fund is being supported by an esteemed advisory board and the local community.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has suggested that allegations of corruption against President Joe Biden may be worthy of an impeachment inquiry, prompting a response from Democrats who have dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The Biden administration has also denied any wrongdoing, while former President Donald Trump has called for Biden’s prosecution. The House is currently debating government funding bills and it is unclear if the allegations against Biden will be taken up in the near future.
Kevin Spacey is on trial in the U.K. for sexual assault allegations from four men, with Elton John providing testimony in support of Spacey's version of events.
