Johnson & Johnson has announced a settlement of nearly $9 billion to cover thousands of lawsuits alleging that its baby powder containing talc caused cancer. The settlement, which is more than quadruple the amount previously set aside, is one of the largest product-liability settlements in U.S. history and will be payable over the next 25 years. Lamar Johnson, who has been serving a life sentence for nearly 28 years for a killing he has always said he didn't commit, was granted exoneration on Tuesday by a Missouri Circuit Court Judge. The ruling was based on constitutional error and clear and convincing evidence of Johnson's innocence. Johnson's legal team expressed relief and joy at the ruling, which is a major victory for Johnson and a step towards justice for other wrongfully convicted individuals.
The California Lottery announced Tuesday that Edwin Castro was the sole winner of the record-breaking $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot. Joe Chahayed, the business owner who sold the winning ticket, was rewarded with a bonus of $1 million. The lottery said it will continue to support the state's public education system with the proceeds from the Powerball jackpot.
