Burning Man Festival-Goers Forced to Shelter-in-Place Due to Heavy Rain and Impassable Mud Pits

Tens of thousands of Burning Man festival-goers in the Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada have been issued a shelter-in-place order due to heavy rain making the area an impassable mud pit. The Bureau of Land Management has closed the Black Rock airport and only emergency vehicles are permitted to drive on the playa or festival grounds. Participants are urged to conserve supplies and remain in a safe place until the order is lifted.

Fed’s Interest Rate Hikes Successfully Cool Inflation, But Persistently High Core Inflation Remains a Concern

US government reported that inflation cooled to its slowest pace in more than two years, with the Consumer Price Index growing at an annual rate of 3%. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose 4.8% on an annual basis. The cooling of inflation is seen as a sign that the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes are having the desired effect, but the Fed will need to continue to monitor inflation closely to ensure it remains at a manageable level.

The Justice Department's Inspector General has released a report concluding that negligence and misconduct enabled Jeffrey Epstein to take his own life in a federal jail in New York City while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The report found that systemic negligence, misconduct, and under-resourcing among federal prison staff and facilities contributed to Epstein's death, and recommended that the Bureau of Prisons take steps to improve its monitoring of inmates and ensure that staff are properly trained and equipped.

Ted Kaczynski, the Infamous Unabomber, Dies in Prison at Age 72

Ted Kaczynski, the notorious Unabomber, has died in his prison cell in North Carolina. He was convicted of setting 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others across the US between 1978 and 1995. His arrest in 1996 ended a 20 year reign of terror, culminating in a bomb detonating on an American Airlines flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C. in 1979. His death marks the end of a decades-long saga of terror and destruction, leaving a lasting impact on the victims and their families, as well as the country as a whole.
