The 2021 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has seen a historic lack of success for the four teams deemed to be the best in the country, with no No. 1 seeds making it to the Elite Eight or Final Four for the first time since 1979 and 2011, respectively. This is attributed to the parity in the tournament, with any of the remaining teams having a chance to make history.

San Diego State University's men's basketball team made history on Friday night, becoming the first No. 5 seed to reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Led by guard Darrion Trammell's 21 points and five rebounds, the Aztecs defeated the top-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide 71-64 in the Sweet 16. This marks the first time in NCAA men's basketball tournament history that all four No. 1 seeds have failed to reach the Elite Eight. The Aztecs, led by head coach Brian Dutcher, will now face either Creighton or Princeton on Sunday in the West Region final as they seek their first Final Four in program history.
The World Athletics Council has voted to ban transgender women from competing in women’s international track and field competitions, citing fairness as the primary reason. The new regulations, which will go into effect on March 31, 2021, are similar to those adopted by swimming last year and are expected to have a significant impact on Caster Semenya, a two-time Olympic champion at 800 meters. The decision has sparked controversy, with some arguing that it is unfair to exclude transgender athletes from competing in women’s events.
Willis Reed, a two-time NBA champion and one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, passed away on May 8th. He is remembered for his iconic performance in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, where he entered the court despite suffering from a torn thigh muscle and inspired his team and the fans with his courage and determination. His legacy will live on in the hearts of Knicks fans and those who admired him from afar.
Arkansas' eighth-seeded Razorbacks pulled off a stunning upset of top seed and defending national champion Kansas on Saturday, with Ricky Council IV's five free throws in the closing seconds sealing the 72-71 victory. Coach Eric Musselman celebrated in style, jumping onto the press table and ripping off his shirt, while his players rushed across the floor to join in the jubilation. The win follows No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson's historic upset of No. 1 Purdue on Friday night, setting the stage for more thrilling upsets in the NCAA Tournament.
Princeton Tigers made history on Saturday, becoming the fourth 15-seed to reach the Sweet 16 in NCAA men’s basketball tournament history. Led by senior guard Ryan Langborg with 22 points and six rebounds, and sophomore guard Blake Peters with 17 points, the Tigers beat No. 7 seed Missouri 78-63, the largest margin victory in tournament history for a 15 seed. This marks the first time in 56 years that Princeton has reached the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals.
In a historic upset, the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 63-58 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, becoming only the second No. 16 seed to ever win an NCAA Tournament game. Led by Sean Moore's 19 points and relentless hustle and defense, the Knights swarmed 7-foot-4 All-America center Zach Edey from the start. The Boilermakers had a chance to tie the game late, but a three-point shot missed, leaving head coach Tobin Anderson speechless on the court. This victory follows the first 16-over-1 victory five years ago when UMBC overwhelmed Virginia.
