Jay-Z is moving from behind the scenes to center stage at the Super Bowl. The rapper, whose company helps produce the halftime show, will headline the performance on Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The NFL, Apple Music and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation announced the booking Monday night after days of speculation. The game will be Super Bowl LXI. The announcement did not say whether Jay-Z would perform alone, the BBC reported.
“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” Jay-Z said in a statement. “Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”
The announcement comes just after Jay-Z performed at SoFi Stadium. Those shows closed his “Jay-Z 30” concert run, which also included dates in New York and London. According to the BBC, the tour marked the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Roc Nation has worked with the NFL since 2019, advising on and helping produce the league’s entertainment presentations, including the Super Bowl halftime show. Its first halftime production under the partnership featured Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020. When the arrangement began, Jay-Z said he had told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: “If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now.”
Goodell said Monday he had hoped Jay-Z would eventually take the stage. “When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” he said. “I couldn’t be more excited for fans around the world to experience the artistry, creativity and cultural impact he will bring to the Super Bowl stage.”
CBS News reported that a video accompanying the announcement showed Jay-Z sitting in SoFi Stadium surrounded by goats, with the caption “GOAT’s out of the bag.” The NFL also raised the possibility of guests, according to the BBC, saying that speculation about who might join him would begin and that his wife, Beyoncé, would be “atop the list.” No guest performers were announced.
Born Shawn Carter, Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards and received 89 nominations, the second-most in history behind Beyoncé, who has performed at two Super Bowls. His albums include Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and The Black Album. His songs include “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” “99 Problems” and “Empire State of Mind,” a collaboration with Alicia Keys. Reasonable Doubt, released in 1996, entered the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.
Beyond recording, Jay-Z co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and founded Roc Nation in 2008. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Bad Bunny headlined the previous Super Bowl halftime show in February. His songs rose sharply on streaming charts and music discovery platforms afterward.
