Nearly 40,000 bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief eye drops have been voluntarily recalled nationwide because of a potential contamination risk, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall covers 39,060 bottles of the over-the-counter product, which is used to relieve itchy eyes, redness and other eye irritation. The affected products are 0.5-fluid-ounce, or 15 mL, bottles labeled Lot 2552A, with an expiration date of Sept. 30, 2027. The FDA listed the recall number as D-0766-2026.

The recall began July 29 and is ongoing, NBC News reported. The FDA notice said the reason for the recall was “lack of assurance of sterility” and described the issue as potential contamination.

The eye drops were distributed nationwide by Medtech Products, which is owned by New York-based Prestige Consumer Healthcare. They are sold over the counter at major retailers, including CVS and Walmart, according to NBC News.

The FDA classified the recall as Class II. Under the agency’s definition, that means use of or exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.

No injuries have been reported from use of the recalled eye drops, NBC News reported.

Prestige Consumer Healthcare did not immediately respond to requests for comment from CBS News and NBC News.
