Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care after she was wounded in a shooting at the couple’s Northern Virginia home, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday.
Reid gave the update after the Chiefs’ first full-squad workout of training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, which Eric Bieniemy missed while remaining with his family. The shooting happened late Sunday at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia, and authorities have described it as a domestic disturbance.
“She’s doing great. She’s doing better and great from where she was, out of the ICU unit and making progress,” Reid told reporters, according to NBC News. “So, we’re happy about that. EB is still with her and that part’s important that that stays in place.”
Reid also said, “She’s making progress, so we’re happy about that,” The Guardian reported.
The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities said he was booked on suspicion of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. The Guardian reported he was being held without bond Wednesday at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
A criminal complaint filed in support of Elijah Bieniemy’s arrest said the suspect fired a.22-caliber Ruger, “causing injuries to the area of her left forearm and left shoulder with a projectile traveling across her chest,” according to NBC News. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told NBC News earlier this week that Mia Bieniemy was able to call 911 herself after being shot.
Video and audio of the law enforcement response showed deputies carrying Mia Bieniemy away from the home as other officers, with rifles drawn, moved toward the house on Northpark Drive, where Elijah Bieniemy was arrested, NBC News reported. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
Court proceedings are pending. The Guardian reported Elijah Bieniemy had a motions hearing scheduled for Thursday and a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 31. NBC News reported his next court date was set for Aug. 31.
The shooting has kept Eric Bieniemy away from the Chiefs as they begin training camp. Reid said there is no timetable for his return but that the team remains in contact with him.
“We stay in touch with him, keep him abreast of everything that’s going on,” Reid said. “He’s got the tape, watching whatever spare time he’s got there.”
Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year after previous stops with the Washington Commanders, UCLA and the Chicago Bears. The Guardian reported he helped the Chiefs reach three Super Bowls and win two before leaving for Washington in 2023. With Bieniemy absent, pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier has assumed many of his responsibilities, while veteran offensive line coach Andy Heck has taken on others.
NBC News noted that Eric Bieniemy runs a Kansas City offense that includes quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, whom it described as the new husband of 14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift. The Chiefs open the exhibition season on Aug. 15 and the regular season on Sept. 14.
