The 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged in the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at a home in Northern Virginia, authorities said Monday.
Deputies with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded late Sunday to a shooting in Ashburn, a Washington, D.C., suburb, and found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Monday, according to authorities cited by The Guardian and CBS News.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities said he has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and held without bond.
The sheriff’s office said the shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Northpark Drive. Authorities also said there “is not believed to be any threat to the public.”
The Chiefs were holding preseason training at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eric Bieniemy was with the team at practice earlier Sunday, according to The Guardian and CBS News, but was not present for Monday’s workout.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” Chiefs spokesperson Brad Gee said Monday, according to NBC News. “Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
The team gave a similar statement to CBS affiliate KCTV, saying it would not comment further out of respect for the family’s privacy.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, is in his second stint as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. He previously ran Kansas City’s offense from 2018 to 2022, a stretch in which the team reached three Super Bowls. CBS News reported, citing CBS Sports Research, that the Chiefs led the NFL with 30.1 points per game during that period.
After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023 and held the same titles with the UCLA Bruins in 2024. He spent the 2025 season as running backs coach for the Chicago Bears before returning to the Chiefs.
CBS News reported that the Chiefs hired Bieniemy as offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy left to join John Harbaugh and the New York Giants. Head coach Andy Reid was expected to speak with reporters after Monday’s practice, according to CBS News.
