Swift and Kelce wedding events reportedly planned at Madison Square Garden

Key takeaways:

  • CBS News reported that a rehearsal dinner for about 100 people is planned Thursday at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater.
  • A larger Friday celebration at Madison Square Garden is expected to accommodate about 1,000 guests and run into early Saturday morning.
  • New York City police are preparing for the private event, with about 135 officers likely assigned, according to CBS News.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are expected to draw about 1,000 guests to Madison Square Garden this holiday weekend for wedding-related celebrations, according to law enforcement sources familiar with security planning, as New York City prepares for heavy traffic, media attention and crowds of fans outside the arena.

CBS News reported that the couple plans a rehearsal dinner Thursday evening at the Infosys Theater inside Madison Square Garden, followed by a larger celebration Friday that will run into the early hours of Saturday. ABC News first reported the planned celebrations Tuesday.

The Thursday rehearsal dinner is expected to include about 100 family members, friends and VIPs, with festivities scheduled from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., the sources told CBS. The larger Friday event can accommodate around 1,000 people, with the space booked until 4 a.m.

Guests attending Friday’s celebration are expected to enter through a special VIP area covered by a tent. Doors are scheduled to open at 3:30 p.m., followed by cocktails on the sixth-floor concourse at 4 p.m., a ceremony on the arena floor at 5:30 p.m. and a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and running until 2 a.m., CBS reported. The sources cautioned that exact times could change.

The event is expected to feature musical talent, and a massive set is being built inside the arena, according to CBS. Large trucks have been seen outside Madison Square Garden in recent days, with crews unloading stage equipment, lights and other gear. Some materials were labeled “Garden Party” or “GP.” The BBC reported that crews were also seen unloading foliage, boxes labeled “branches,” a box marked “40-inch mirror ball,” a large white staircase railing and food boxes, including one that appeared to contain lobster.

No representative for Swift or Kelce has publicly confirmed that the wedding is taking place at Madison Square Garden. The BBC said it contacted representatives for the pair, but they did not comment.

City officials confirmed to the BBC that a street closure permit was filed in early June for roads around the arena from July 2 to July 4. CBS reported last week that Swift’s team applied for a street activity permit for the same period. The New York Times first reported that permits had been requested for a large event at Madison Square Garden over the Independence Day weekend, the BBC reported.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday that the NYPD has a detail in place for a private event at the arena, but did not provide specifics. Asked about security, she said the department’s intelligence and counterterrorism divisions assess major events across the city.

“We will make sure that we have the appropriate resources based on their assessments for that specific private event as we do for all major events,” Tisch said.

CBS reported that about 135 NYPD officers are likely to be assigned to the Thursday and Friday events, with roughly 25% of officer hours expected to be billed as overtime at about $90 to $100 per hour per officer. An event organizer typically covers overtime police staffing costs, according to the sources. Security officials expect about 500 vehicles to bring guests, and the couple has also hired private security.

John Hart, a retired NYPD assistant chief with experience in high-profile event security, told CBS that Madison Square Garden’s confined space should help protect the couple and guests. But he added, “That said, it will be swarmed by media of all types and fans hoping to catch a glimpse.”

Hart said the NYPD will likely manage media areas and “fan pens” outside the secured zone, while paparazzi following guest vehicles and gathering at hotels could also become a police issue.

Speculation around the couple’s plans has intensified as New York also prepares for World Cup events, America’s 250th birthday events and a heat wave, the BBC reported. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has alluded to the rumors, saying at a Tuesday news conference, “If you happen to be getting married at MSG, you will be staying inside and staying cool, and I think it’s a good example to set for the city at large.”
