Five people were shot and injured early Sunday morning near the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, police said. Among the wounded were three University of Iowa students, according to university officials.

The Iowa City Police Department responded to reports of a large fight at approximately 1:46 a.m. in the 100 block of East College Street, a pedestrian mall area near the university. Upon arrival, officers heard gunfire. Multiple victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Police confirmed one person was in critical condition while the other four were stable.

University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson issued a statement confirming that three students were among those injured. “While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,” Wilson said. “I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.”

The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. Video circulating on social media showed a large confrontation involving numerous people, with some punching and kicking others as bystanders urged them to stop. Additional footage depicted a crowd fleeing the scene. Scanner traffic recordings indicated at least four people suffered gunshot wounds.

The pedestrian mall was closed for several hours following the incident and reopened Sunday afternoon. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are seeking information about five “persons of interest” connected to the shooting and have asked the public to come forward with any relevant details.

University of Iowa Health Care confirmed it received patients from the incident and is evaluating their injuries but did not provide further updates on their conditions.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds offered the state’s full resources to assist with the investigation, calling the event a “senseless act of violence” that has devastated both the university community and the state.
