Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey is making a return to politics after nearly two decades, announcing his candidacy for mayor of Jersey City. McGreevey, 66, is the nation’s first openly gay governor, and is looking to re-enter politics nearly 20 years after he left.

McGreevey announced his candidacy in a video posted online, and held a news conference Thursday at a local restaurant to formally launch his campaign. In the video, McGreevey acknowledged his imperfections, saying “I was imperfect and I’ll always be imperfect.”

McGreevey was elected governor in 2002, and in August 2004 he made a public announcement that he was “a gay American” and had an extramarital affair with a male staffer. At the news conference, he was surrounded by many members of the state’s Democratic political machine.

“My pledge, my commitment today is to work as hard as humanly possible to make Jersey City the best it can be for every community, for every neighborhood and every family,” McGreevey said.

McGreevey is hoping to win the mayoral election in November, and if successful, he will be the first former governor to become mayor of a major city in New Jersey. He is running against incumbent Mayor Steven Fulop, who is seeking a third term.
