On Thursday evening, Nov. 9, 2023, Brent Ray Brewer, 53, was executed by lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville for the April 1990 death of Robert Laminack. Brewer was convicted of fatally stabbing Laminack during a robbery more than 33 years ago.

Brewer’s execution came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to step in over the inmate’s claims that prosecutors had relied on false and discredited expert testimony at his 2009 resentencing trial. Brewer’s attorneys argued that the false and unscientific expert testimony used to sentence him to death was unconstitutional.

The lethal injection began at 6:24 p.m. local time, and Brewer was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m. Brewer’s execution was the fifth in Texas this year and the 547th since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982.

Brewer’s execution has sparked debate among those who oppose the death penalty, citing the use of false and unscientific expert testimony in his case. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has not yet released a statement on the matter.
