Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton is making “remarkable” progress in her recovery from a rare form of pneumonia, her daughter McKenna Kelley said Saturday.

Retton, 55, was admitted to the intensive care unit over a week ago and was unable to breathe on her own. In an update on Kelley’s Instagram page, she said that Retton’s breathing is becoming stronger and her reliance on machines is diminishing.

“We’re thrilled to share some uplifting news,” McKenna Kelley said in her post. “Although she remains in ICU, her path to recovery is steadily progressing.”

Kelley had previously said that Retton was “fighting for her life” and started a crowd-funding page to help cover hospital bills.

Retton won the all-around gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and was the first American woman to do so. She also won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the Games. She was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
