Yoni Asher, an Israel resident, watched on social media as a video emerged of his wife, two young daughters and mother-in-law being taken by Hamas and crammed onto the back of a vehicle. Finer stated that the U.S. will be “laser focused” on confirming any Americans that may have been taken hostage.

Hamas is believed to be holding scores of hostages after hundreds of members of the militant group launched an attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip on Sunday. Finer said that due to the sheer numbers involved, there may well be Americans who have been taken hostage.

Israel has not yet said how many people have been taken hostage in the unprecedented attack. The Biden administration has promised to offer “every kind of support” to Israel in this situation, and will be focused on confirming any Americans that may have been taken hostage.
