Key takeaways:

  • Suffolk County police have arrested Rex Heuermann in connection with the unsolved Gilgo Beach serial killer case.
  • Heuermann had a cache of more than 200 guns in a vault inside his home.
  • Investigators are not releasing any further information about items/evidence seized.

After a decade-long investigation, Suffolk County police have arrested Rex Heuermann, 59, in connection with the unsolved Gilgo Beach serial killer case. Heuermann, a married New York architect, was charged Friday with three counts of first-degree murder and is currently being held without bail.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison revealed on Monday that Heuermann had a cache of more than 200 guns in a vault inside his home. Investigators are still trying to determine if the weapons are legally registered.

The case had remained unsolved since the December 2010 discovery of the bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Megan Waterman, 22, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, who died in the summers of 2009 and 2010. Heuermann lived an unassuming life near his victims, had no known history of violent crime, and presumably didn’t raise alarm bells among his family and friends.

So what led investigators to surround and arrest Heuermann on Thursday as he strolled down Fifth Avenue after leaving his Manhattan office at 8:30 p.m.? A police spokesperson said they are not “releasing anything further about items/evidence seized.”

The investigation into the Gilgo Beach serial killer case has captivated the public for years, with numerous podcasts, books and films about the killings, as well as hordes of citizen sleuths speculating on message boards and social media. Now, with the arrest of Rex Heuermann, the case may finally be close to being solved.
