The incident occurred on Wednesday night in Las Vegas, when Spears said she wanted to introduce herself to Wembanyama. Spears said that as she approached the athlete, a member of his security team backhanded her in the face, nearly knocking her down and causing her glasses to fly off her face.
Spears took to social media to share her story, writing, “I recognized an athlete in my hotel lobby as I was heading to dinner. I decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success. His security then backhanded me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd.”
Wembanyama said that he was grabbed from behind by a person he later found out was Spears. He said he was unaware of the altercation until after it had happened.
Spears’ husband, Sam Asghari, also took to social media to express his outrage at the security guard’s actions.
