Five young women were tragically killed in a car accident last week in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On Thursday, the driver of the vehicle, Derrick Thompson, 27, was charged with 10 counts of vehicular homicide.

Thompson, the son of a former Minnesota state representative, was driving a black Cadillac Escalade SUV when he allegedly sped into and killed the five young Muslim women who were preparing for a friend’s wedding.

According to the complaint, state troopers observed Thompson traveling at 95 mph in a 55 mph zone. He is also accused of running a red light and recklessly driving the SUV.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty released a statement on Thursday, saying, “This tragedy has caused a great deal of pain and sorrow for the families of the victims and our hearts go out to them. We will do everything we can to ensure justice is served.”

Thompson is currently being held in the Hennepin County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 6. If convicted, he could face up to 40 years in prison.
