Greek authorities have revised the confirmed death toll from a sea disaster in southern Greece to 78 after a fishing boat crammed with migrants seeking to make it from Libya to Italy capsized and sank a day earlier in deep waters off the Greek coast.

Rescue workers have been searching for possible survivors since the incident occurred. So far, 104 passengers have been saved, including Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Afghans and Palestinians, mostly men and including eight minors. However, authorities fear that hundreds of others may have been trapped below deck.

The bodies of the dead migrants have been transferred to refrigerated trucks. The search for survivors is ongoing, with the help of the Greek coast guard, the European Union’s border agency Frontex, and the Hellenic Navy.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 1,000 people have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean this year alone.
