Former Vice President Mike Pence expressed concern over the federal charges against former President Donald Trump, saying the alleged conduct could have put national security and the safety of the armed forces at risk.

Speaking Wednesday morning on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Pence said that “even the inadvertent release” of information on America’s nuclear program or defense capabilities “could compromise our national security and the safety of our armed forces.”

“This indictment contains serious charges and I cannot defend what is alleged,” Pence said, before noting his family’s service in the military to underline his concerns about the impact of Trump’s alleged conduct.

“The very prospect that what is alleged here took place, creating an opportunity where highly sensitive classified material could have fallen into the wrong hands, even inadvertently, that jeopardizes our national security, it puts at risk the men and women of our Armed forces,” Pence said.

However, Pence also said that Trump is “entitled to his day in court” and that he wants to “reserve judgment until he has the opportunity to respond.” Pence and Trump are now rivals in the 2024 Republican presidential race.
