A 58-year-old white woman has been arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm and other offenses, after fatally shooting her 35-year-old Black neighbor in Ocala, Florida.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting was the culmination of a 2-and-a-half-year feud between the neighbors, Ajike Owens and Susan Lorincz. Evidence showed that Lorincz had become angry over Owens’ children playing in a nearby area.

The incident has put Florida’s divisive “stand your ground law” back in the spotlight. The law allows people to use deadly force if they feel threatened, without having to retreat.

About three dozen mostly Black protesters gathered outside the Marion County Judicial Center to demand that the shooter be arrested. Sheriff Billy Woods said that authorities needed as much time and evidence as possible to make a case.

The shooting has become the latest flashpoint over race and gun violence in the United States. Lorincz is currently being held in the Marion County Jail.
