Jill Biden to Make History by Becoming First U.S. First Lady to Attend Coronation of British Monarch

The United States First Lady, Jill Biden, is set to make history this Saturday by becoming the first U.S. first lady to attend the coronation of a British monarch. Seventy years ago, one of her predecessors, Jacqueline Bouvier, was in London to document the occasion.

On Friday, Mrs. Biden met with Akshata Murty, the wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at No. 10 Downing St., the prime minister’s official residence. The two women discussed a health and wellness program for veterans and their families. Mrs. Biden is also engaging in some soft diplomacy while in London.

Mrs. Biden was just two years old when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in June 1953. At the time, Jacqueline Bouvier was a 23-year-old freelance journalist and wrote for the Washington Times-Herald. She described the scene in London as “amazing” due to the hordes of Americans present for the “colourful event”.

Queen Elizabeth II held the throne for seven decades until her death in September at age 96. In 1961, Mrs. Bouvier met the queen at a gala dinner for her husband at Buckingham Palace. Mrs. Biden is traveling with Finnegan Biden, one of her granddaughters, for the coronation of King Charles II.

This Saturday marks a historic moment for the United States, as Mrs. Biden becomes the first U.S. first lady to attend the coronation of a British monarch. It is a moment that will be remembered for years to come.
