Dr. Rochelle Walensky Resigns as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Signaling Transition to a New Normal

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has announced her resignation, effective June 30. In a letter to President Joe Biden, Walensky expressed “mixed feelings” about the decision but said the nation is at a moment of transition as emergency declarations come to an end.

President Biden praised Walensky’s work, saying in a statement, “As Director of the CDC, she led a complex organization on the frontlines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity. She marshalled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced, and her leadership has saved lives with her steadfast and unwavering focus on the health of every American.”

Walensky has been the director of the CDC since Biden took office in January 2021. During her tenure, she has been a key figure in the administration’s pandemic response. She has been credited with helping to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the United States.

The CDC has not yet named an interim director to replace Walensky. It is unclear who will take over the role and what the future of the agency will be. However, Walensky’s departure is a sign that the pandemic is beginning to wane and that the nation is transitioning to a new normal.
