A Texas woman has been charged with murder after punching a pregnant medical worker, causing her to lose her unborn child, authorities said Monday.

Cheri Akil, 39, was an inmate of the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office last week when she was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Akil is alleged to have punched a pregnant hospital staff member in the stomach, and the staffer was immediately taken to a trauma unit for treatment.

An ultrasound was performed and it was determined that the unborn child no longer had a pulse, the sheriff’s statement said. Akil had been arrested two days before for credit card or debit card abuse.

CBS Texas’ Annie Gimbel and Caroline Vandergriff report that the alleged assault happened on April 12 at John Peter Smith Hospital. Police said Akil was restrained due to suicidal tendencies.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office said Akil has been charged with murder and is being held in the Tarrant County Jail. The medical worker is recovering from her injuries.

The motive for the attack is still unknown. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
