A Massachusetts Air National Guardsman has been charged with unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information and unauthorized removal of classified information and defense materials, following a weeklong criminal investigation into the disclosure of government records.
Jack Teixeira, 21, appeared in court on Friday to face charges under the Espionage Act. He was arrested on Thursday by heavily armed tactical agents.
According to charging documents, Teixeira held a top secret security clearance and allegedly began posting information about the documents online around December 2022, and photos of documents in January.
The documents in question were highly classified military documents, which were posted on social media and exposed to the world unvarnished secret assessments on the war in Ukraine, the capabilities and other sensitive information.
The FBI was able to identify Teixeira as a suspect in the leak of the documents by using billing records of an Internet social media platform and interviewing another user.
The case is ongoing and Teixeira is currently being held in federal custody.
