At least four hikers were killed and two more are missing after an avalanche swept through the French Alps on Sunday.

The avalanche occurred near Mont Blanc in southeastern France and was approximately 3,280 feet long and 328 feet wide. Two helicopters were sent in to help in the search, according to the local prefecture in Thonon.

Among the dead were two mountain guides caught by the snow tumbling down the Armancette glacier, the prefecture for the Haute-Savoie department said. The avalanche rolled down the Armancette glacier in Contamines-Montjoie, in the Haute-Savoie region, almost 20 miles southwest of Chamonix.

One person also suffered slight injuries in the avalanche while eight others also swept up were unharmed, the prefecture said. France’s interior minister called the death toll a provisional count.

Rescue teams are continuing to search for the two missing hikers and are urging caution to those who plan to venture into the area. The cause of the avalanche is still under investigation.
