EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Police in El Paso, Texas, say one person was killed and three other people were wounded in a shooting at a shopping mall Wednesday.

Interim police chief Peter Pacillas said that Cielo Vista Mall was still considered a crime scene, and that it would remain locked down until authorities had completed their investigation.

An off-duty officer working security at the mall took a person identified only as a male into custody three minutes after gunshots were reported around 5 p.m., Pacillas said. A second person also identified as a male was taken into custody later, he said.

Reports of gunfire came from the mall’s food court, police said. The two people in custody and as well as the victims are males, Pacillas said.

The mall is next to the Walmart where a gunman killed 23 people and injured 22 in 2019. Pacillas said that there was no more danger to the public.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information has been released at this time.
