On Wednesday, Dr. Thom Mayer, medical director of the NFL Players Association, gave an optimistic prognosis on the playing future of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Hamlin had gone into cardiac arrest after making a tackle in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals last month.

Mayer said on SiriusXM Doctor Radio’s “Heart to Heart” program, “I guarantee you that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again.” He added, “I don’t want to get into HIPAA issues, but I guarantee you, I guarantee you … that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again.”

At the time of the incident, doctors and trainers administered CPR and used a defibrillator on the field to resuscitate Hamlin before he was taken out of the stadium in an ambulance. The incident left players, coaches, fans and the TV audience in shock.

Since the incident, Hamlin has not publicly addressed a return to the field. A rep for Hamlin could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday. However, with Mayer’s optimistic prognosis, it appears that Hamlin may have a chance to return to the field.
