President Joe Biden expressed outrage and pain Friday evening after Memphis police released footage of five officers beating Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop earlier this month.
The video, which was released shortly after the White House released a statement from Biden, shows officers kicking and punching Nichols while he is on the ground after a traffic stop on Jan. 7.
“Like so many, I was outraged and deeply pained to see the horrific video of the beating that resulted in Tyre Nichols’ death,” Biden said in the statement.
The President spoke with the mother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols on Friday afternoon ahead of the release of body camera footage of his violent arrest. He joined Nichols’ family in calling for peaceful protest.
“It is yet another painful reminder of the profound fear and trauma, the pain, and the exhaustion that Black and Brown Americans experience every single day,” Biden said.
