The University of Georgia football team is mourning the loss of two members of their program after a fatal car crash early Sunday morning.
According to a statement from the UGA Athletic Association, Devin Willock, a 20-year-old redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from New Milford, New Jersey, and Chandler LeCroy, a 24-year-old football staff member, were killed in the crash. Two other members of the football program were also injured.
The accident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday in Athens, Georgia, south of the university’s campus. Willock and LeCroy were among four people in the vehicle at the time of the crash, according to reporting from CNN affiliate WXIA.
The tragedy occurred just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their second consecutive national championship win with a parade and ceremony. Willock had played in all 15 of the team’s games this year, according to Georgia’s football roster.
The UGA Athletic Association expressed their condolences in a statement, saying, “Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the Bulldog family. We are devastated by the news of their passing and our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
