Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell revealed during a press conference that one officer, a rookie patrolling on his first day with the NYPD, suffered a fractured skull. FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. said the suspect acted alone and praised the officer’s actions.

“He understood that his role saved lives of New Yorkers today,” Sweeney said.

The incident occurred at 10 p.m. ET at West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue, outside of the high-security zone where revelers were screened at checkpoints. All three officers are in stable condition and there are no credible threats to New Yorkers at this time, Sweeney said.

Investigators are looking into whether the suspect had posted jihadist writings online and traveled to New York to target police on New Year’s Eve. He was known to law enforcement agencies for his social media postings, but did not have a past criminal record.
