U.S. Airstrikes Target Houthi Rebels in Yemen, Escalating Tensions and Prompting Retaliation Threats

Explosions were reported in the Yemeni cities of Sanaa and Saada following U.S. airstrikes ordered by President Donald Trump, targeting Iran-backed Houthi rebels to curb their capacity to attack global shipping and U.S. interests. The airstrikes resulted in at least 31 fatalities and 101 injuries, prompting vows of retaliation from the Houthis, who have been launching missiles and drones in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the global interest in these strikes, highlighting their role in maintaining secure maritime passages, while the situation in Yemen adds complexity to regional geopolitical dynamics and is being closely monitored by the international community.

Houthi Rebels Launch Drone Attack on Israeli Port Town, Causing Prolonged Communications Blackout in Gaza Strip

Today, the Yemeni Houthi rebels announced an attack on the port town of Eliat in southern Israel using "a large batch of drones", resulting in a prolonged communications blackout. This blackout has compounded the misery in the besieged Gaza Strip, with the Houthi group claiming they had carried out the attack in support of Palestinians living under "killing, destruction and siege". The blackout has hampered aid deliveries and rescue efforts as the war against Gaza's ruling militant group Hamas stretched into the 11th week.

Tragic Incident in Yemen’s Capital Kills 78 and Injures 73 During Ramadan Event

At least 78 people were killed and 73 injured in a tragic incident in Yemen's capital late Wednesday night, sparked by armed Houthis firing into the air in an attempt at crowd control. The incident occurred during an event to distribute financial aid during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and is the deadliest incident in Yemen in years that was not related directly to the country's long-running civil war. The Houthi rebel group and the Yemeni government have launched investigations into the cause of the tragedy, and the international community must continue to work to bring an end to the conflict and to ensure the safety and security of the Yemeni people.
