Trent Thompson, a 22-year-old Texas inmate, escaped from the Formby State Jail in Plainview, Texas on Saturday night. He was apprehended in Coleman, Texas, 250 miles away, the next day. Thompson had been convicted of three counts of aggravated robbery and an aggravated assault on a public servant. No further details have been released about the escape or Thompson's capture.

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a one-sentence notice with the federal court in El Paso, announcing that they will not seek the death penalty for Patrick Crusius, who is accused of fatally shooting nearly two dozen people in a racist attack at a West Texas Walmart in 2019. Crusius is charged with federal hate crimes and firearms violations, as well as capital murder in state court, and could still face the death penalty if convicted. The trial is expected to begin in October, and the sentence he could face is currently unclear.
