Former President Donald Trump has been hit with an additional charge of willful retention of national defense information as part of Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. The indictment has swelled from 38 to 42 counts, including the new charge related to the Iran war plan document allegedly flaunted at Bedminster. Trump has denied the charges and called it "prosecutorial misconduct" while ordering the White House to release all documents related to the case.
Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and GOP presidential candidate, has met the Republican Party's donor requirements and is confident he will poll high enough to qualify for the party's first debate next month. The RNC requires candidates to register at least 1% support in three national polls, or 1% in two national polls and in two early-state polls from separate states. Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis downplayed the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol on Friday. The RNC will announce the list of candidates who qualify for the debate stage on Aug. 17.

Brian Kemp to "find" votes, which is currently the subject of criminal investigations. The Washington Post report reveals the lengths Trump and his allies were willing to go to overturn the election results.
Mike Pence made a surprise visit to Ukraine last week to signal his commitment to a more traditional foreign policy, and voiced his support for the Supreme Court's ruling in the 303 Creative v. Elenis case, which protects a designer from creating speech that she does not believe. His visit and support of the ruling are seen as important markers for his potential 2024 presidential campaign, and draw a sharp contrast between him and former President Donald Trump's more isolationist direction.
Geraldine Roll, the elections director of Pinal County, Arizona, has resigned after accusing the county of caving to "a faction of the Republican party" and failing to protect her from "intimidation". Her resignation has sparked a debate about the role of politics in local elections departments, and it remains to be seen how the county will respond and ensure its elections department remains free from political influence.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has raised doubts about whether former President Donald Trump is the best Republican candidate to defeat President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. He suggested that Trump could win in 2024, but noted that his legal troubles could complicate the situation. Other Republicans have also questioned Trump's electability, and McCarthy's comments suggest he may be open to other candidates for the GOP nomination in 2024.
