Florida Senate Passes Bill to Repeal Unanimous Jury Recommendation for Death Penalty in Response to Parkland Shooting

The Florida Senate has passed a bill that would repeal a law requiring a unanimous jury recommendation for the death penalty in response to the life sentence handed to the Parkland shooter. The bill would allow the death penalty with a jury recommendation of at least 8-4 in favor of execution and also includes a measure to scrap existing requirements for concealed weapons permits. The bill has been met with mixed reactions from the public and will now move to the House for further consideration.

Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Gov. DeSantis Over Suspension of Former State Attorney Andrew Warren

A federal judge has dismissed the lawsuit brought by former Florida state attorney Andrew Warren against Governor Ron DeSantis for suspending him last year. The judge ruled that the suspension violated Warren's free speech rights, but that he could not reverse the state-level suspension due to federal law. Warren will now have to plead his case to the Republican-controlled Florida Senate, which has the final say on whether to permanently remove him from office.
