American hockey player Adam Johnson died following a “freak accident” during a game in England on Saturday. He suffered a serious cut to the neck from a skate, and was taken to a hospital in Sheffield where he was pronounced dead. The Elite Ice Hockey League released a statement expressing their “deepest sympathies” to Johnson’s family and friends, noting he was an “incredible player and a great person” who had played for the Minnesota Wild and the San Jose Sharks in the NHL, and was a member of Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The U.S. women's gymnastics team won their seventh consecutive world championship title on Wednesday night in Antwerp, Belgium, led by four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles. Despite an injury to Joscelyn Roberson in warmups, the team was able to put up a dominant performance and won by a margin of 2.199 points. Shohei Ohtani sealed Japan's victory with a full-count slider to strike out Mike Trout, and Munetaka Murakami tied the score with a home run off Team USA starter Merrill Kelly in the eighth inning. Japan went 7-0 and outscored opponents 56-18, becoming the only unbeaten champions of baseball’s premier national team tournament since 2013.
