Alec Baldwin and Armorer to Face Two Counts of Involuntary Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting of Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

New Mexico district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies has announced that actor Alec Baldwin and the armorer who oversaw all weapons used in the production of the Western movie “Rust” will be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin and the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, both face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, and their attorneys have vowed to fight the charges. The incident occurred in 2021 while filming "Rust," a Western that Baldwin was starring in and producing.

Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie "Rust" in New Mexico. The assistant director, David Halls, has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon. The District Attorney's Office said that the decision to charge Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed with involuntary manslaughter "distorts Halyna Hutchins' tragic death and represents a terrible miscarriage of justice."

Following the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols in police custody in Memphis, Tennessee, the Department of Justice and FBI have launched a civil rights inquiry. The family of Nichols is demanding answers, including the release of body camera footage, and have planned a series of protests over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The investigation is ongoing, and the family and activists are hoping for answers soon.
