David “Davey” Hearn, a U.S. Olympic canoeist, was indicted on a felony destruction of property charge after prosecutors accused him of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner. Hearn denies vandalizing the pool and says he only touched a detached piece of coating.

A prolonged heat wave is spreading across the central and eastern United States, with heat index values expected to top 100 degrees in many cities ahead of the July Fourth holiday. Forecasters warned that high humidity, warm nights and multiple days of heat will raise risks for millions of people.
A National Park Service official said in a court filing that part of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner was cut with a sharp knife or razor. The filing comes amid scrutiny of a multimillion-dollar renovation marked by algae, peeling blue coating and vandalism allegations.
Joey Chestnut, nicknamed "Jaws", won the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest for the 16th time, consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The competition was delayed due to heavy rain, but Chestnut was still able to come out on top. The annual event has been a tradition since 1916 and continues to draw large crowds of spectators.
