Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester Launches Historic Bid to Become Delaware’s First African-American Female U.S. Senator

Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester has announced her bid to replace retiring Sen. Tom Carper (D) in Delaware, making her the first woman and first African-American to represent the state in Congress. If elected, she would become the third Black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate. Blunt Rochester is running on a platform of economic and social justice, and has vowed to fight for the rights of all Delawareans, as well as protecting the environment and ensuring access to quality, affordable healthcare.

Tragedy Strikes as Famed Fertility Doctor Involved in Sperm Donation Scandal Dies in Plane Crash

Dr. Morris Wortman, a New York fertility doctor accused of using his own sperm to impregnate patients without their knowledge or consent, died in a plane crash on Sunday. The aircraft, identified as a Wittman W-5 Buttercup, crashed in a pasture in Orleans County and the cause of the crash is still under investigation. The lawsuit filed against Dr. Wortman is still ongoing and it is unclear how his death will affect the case.

Sen. Tom Carper Announces Retirement After 50 Years of Public Service

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., announced Monday that he will not seek re-election after 20 years in the Senate, instead focusing on clean energy, tackling global warming and spurring economic growth. He has served in public office for nearly 50 years, beginning in 1970, and is confident his former intern, Lisa Blunt Rochester, will make an excellent successor. Carper is proud of the work he has done in the Senate and is looking forward to the next 20 months.
