European Union monitors said global sea surface temperatures reached their highest June levels ever observed. Scientists warned that El Niño and climate change could drive more records in the months ahead.

A heat dome is forecast to bring dangerous temperatures to much of the Midwest, East and Mid-Atlantic over the July Fourth weekend. More than 100 million people are under extreme heat warnings, with heat indices in some areas expected to reach 105 to 115 degrees.

Record heat swept across Europe, with Germany, Denmark and the Czech Republic setting all-time highs as transportation systems, hospitals and public events came under strain. France reported heavy pressure on hospitals, while Italy issued red alerts in 18 cities.
France has reported 40 drownings since Thursday as a severe heat wave drives people into rivers and other unsupervised waters. Record heat has disrupted schools, transportation, landmarks and labor across several European countries.
