California has agreed to pay a $24 million civil rights settlement to the family of Edward Bronstein, who died in police custody in 2020. This is the largest settlement of its kind in the state and the second largest nationally since the George Floyd case. The settlement will be used to fund a trust for Bronstein’s children, and is seen as a sign of progress in the fight for justice and accountability.

Seven California Highway Patrol officers and a nurse have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Edward Bronstein, who died in 2020 after being restrained by multiple officers while they attempted to take a blood sample. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has stated that the officers had a legal duty to Bronstein and that their failure was criminally negligent, leading to his death. If convicted, the officers and nurse could face up to four years in prison.
