Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced that he will not appeal a lower court ruling that Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten should be released from prison after serving 53 years for two infamous murders. The victims' families still feel the impact of the Manson cult's brutal killings more than 50 years later, but Van Houten is expected to be released in the coming months due to her age at the time of the crime, her remorse, and her exemplary behavior in prison.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Texas Sheriff Javier Salazar have written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting a federal investigation into the actions of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been accused of luring and transporting migrants from Massachusetts to California and other states. The letter states that DeSantis has been using people as "political props" and that a federal investigation is necessary to ensure that the migrants' rights are being respected. Newsom, Bonta, and Salazar are urging Garland to take action and are hopeful that their request will be taken seriously.
Allison Mack, best known for her role in "Smallville," was released from a federal prison in California after pleading guilty to various crimes related to her involvement in NXIVM, a purported self-help group that prosecutors said doubled as a secret sex cult. She served nearly two years in prison and avoided a longer sentence by cooperating with federal authorities. It is unclear if she will face any additional restrictions or probation.

A former IRS employee has testified to the House Ways and Means Committee that U.S. Attorney David Weiss sought authority to charge Hunter Biden with charges beyond the tax-related misdemeanors he agreed to plead guilty to this week. The whistleblower alleges that Attorney General Merrick Garland was not being truthful when he testified that Weiss had the authority to charge in other jurisdictions. Hunter Biden's plea deal with Weiss includes avoiding full prosecution on a separate gun possession charge. Questions have been raised about the Biden administration's handling of the investigation and whether Weiss had the authority to bring charges in other jurisdictions.
The US Department of Agriculture has approved the sale of chicken made from animal cells, allowing two California companies to offer lab-grown meat to restaurant tables and eventually, supermarket shelves. This marks the first time that U.S. regulators have approved the sale of such products, and could have a major impact on the food industry by reducing the environmental impact of raising animals for food and providing an alternative for those who wish to avoid animal products. The approval is a major milestone in the development of lab-grown meats, and more companies are expected to follow suit in the near future.
Daniel Rodriguez, a California man, was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to four felony counts related to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, including assaulting a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and conspiring to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election results. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson described him as a "one-man army of hate" and he will have to pay $96,000 to cover medical treatment for the officer and $2,000 in restitution for the destruction of the Capitol. The Justice Department has charged more than 400 people in connection with the attack.
