The competition is part of a multi-year partnership between the event's organizers and the Hard Rock, and the winner of the competition will receive a $1 million prize. The Florida Department of Education's Office of Articulation has blocked the introduction of a new Advanced Placement course for high school students on African American studies, citing that it is "inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value." Education advocates have argued that such courses are essential for students to gain a better understanding of the history of the United States, sparking a debate about the importance of providing students with access to courses that focus on African American studies. The College Board has yet to respond to the letter from the Office of Articulation, and it remains to be seen whether the course will be allowed to move forward.
The U.S. government is set to reach its statutory debt limit on Thursday, prompting the Treasury Department to take “extraordinary measures” to pay the bills. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that failure to meet the government’s obligations would cause irreparable harm to the U.S. economy, and it is now up to Congress to act in a timely manner to increase or suspend the debt limit in order to prevent default. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced the opening of a criminal case against a United States citizen suspected of espionage, further straining the already tense relationship between the two countries. The FSB did not name the individual or say whether they had been taken into custody, but it is speculated that the individual is Paul Whelan, who was detained in Russia four years ago on suspicion of espionage.
Siamak Namazi, an American wrongfully detained in Iran for seven years, has launched a hunger strike to call on President Joe Biden to take notice of US detainees in the country. Namazi has asked Biden to devote one minute of his day for the next seven days to thinking about the tribulations of the U.S. hostages in Iran. The Biden administration has yet to comment on Namazi's hunger strike, but the US State Department has said it is "deeply concerned" about the welfare of all US citizens detained in Iran and committed to securing their release.
Two Democratic lawmakers from New York have called on GOP leaders to cooperate with investigations into freshman Rep. George Santos, who admitted to fabricating parts of his résumé. The House Committee on Ethics is currently investigating the matter, and Reps. Goldman and Torres have asked the GOP leaders to proactively cooperate with the investigation and inform the public of their knowledge of Mr. Santos' deceit. The outcome of the investigation remains to be seen.
House Republicans are calling for the White House to provide information related to searches that have uncovered classified documents at President Joe Biden’s home and former office. Rep. James Comer of Kentucky has requested all documents and communications related to the searches, as well as visitor logs of the president’s home, to determine who might have had access to the classified material and how it got there. Comer is urging the White House to provide a full accounting of the situation, saying the American people deserve to know how their government is handling classified information.
