Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for Rape and Sexual Assault Conviction

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom for one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault. He is already serving a 23-year sentence in New York for similar crimes. The jury acquitted Weinstein of sexual battery and failed to reach verdicts on counts involving two other women. This sentencing marks a major victory for the #MeToo movement and a significant step forward in the fight against sexual assault.

Memphis Fire Department Personnel Relieved of Duty Following Death of Tyre Nichols After Encounter with Police

Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died after a traffic stop with members of the Memphis Police Department. His family has watched body cam footage of the arrest and an independent autopsy found that he suffered "extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating." Two Memphis Fire Department personnel were "relieved of duty" while an internal investigation is conducted. Attorneys representing the family are demanding a full investigation and the release of all evidence related to the incident.

95th Academy Awards Nominations Announced, with ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Leading the Pack

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its list of nominees for the upcoming 95th Oscars on Tuesday, with “Everything Everywhere All At Once” leading the pack with 11 nominations. Previous Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and star of the Oscar-winning film “Get Out” Allison Williams, announced this year’s contenders during a live broadcast Tuesday morning. Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu were both nominated for best actress in a supporting role, however the Academy failed to nominate a single woman for best director. The 2023 awards season continues with Tuesday’s 95th Academy Awards nominees rollout, with the ceremony set to take place on April 25th.
